Phototrophic Organisms -
A Source for New Antiviral Substances!


Relating to this topic innovative methods were introduced and effective questions were discussed at the International Workshop "AntiVirals", which was held at the Institute of Bioprocess Engineering of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg on January 30th and 31st, 2004.

Progress by the cultivation of algae and plants, concepts of analysis and structure determination of interesting antiviral compounds were the subject of the International Workshop "AntiVirals", which took place at the Institute of Bioprocess Engineering on January, 30th and 31st, 2004, initiated by Prof. Dr. Rainer Buchholz and Prof. Dr. Heike Dörnenburg.

Renowned scientists from Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Chile and Germany as well as representatives of privat enterprises discussed the development, production and marketing of vegetable antiviral compounds with a broad-spectrum.

The evaluation of production systems for these active substances, the selection of human, animal and plant viruses as testing systems as well as their application potential, the isolation of active compounds with structure determination and their commercialisation are disciplines of absolute scientific interest and of high economical potential.

The excellent scientific qualification of the participants, the competent accomplishment within the four working groups and last but not least the intensive constructive discussion made the workshop a boundless success. Therefore, the findings make this workshop worth doing on a yearly basis.

Shortly after the establishment of our institute it was important for us to offer an excursion lasting five days from 9th till 14th of February to introduce our working field.

With the excursion we wanted to show the industrial use of biotechnology and possible future working areas. Here the students were also able to get in contact with the companies and to inform themselves about possibilities of practical training or external diploma thesis.

Several companies were visited, which partly varied from each other, to introduce different application fields of biotechnology on one hand and to point up contrasts of different company strategies on the other - from the global corporate group to the comparatively small spin-off-company on the other.
 
This year we visited:

 
Bluedot   BASF (Ludwigshafen, Germany), as a traditional chemical corporate group.
Bluedot   Boehringer Ingelheim (Biberach, Germany), as a biotechnological orientated pharmaceutical corporate group.
Bluedot   Feldschloesschen Brewery (Rheinfelden, Switzerland) as an example for traditional biotechnology, which adapted traditional processes to the modern needs.

Of course, a balanced evening presentation was not to be missing, to enable the participants getting a closer contact to our staff.

The study of chemical and bioengineering will be increased to an International Degree Program. In a pilot phase it will be offered initially for students of the study field "Process engineering/Biotechnology" and "Biotechnology/Technical Chemistry".

This program will be carried out together with the Dongseo University Pusan in Korea, where students can graduate one year each at their home university and the host university and can attend lectures allowed in a certain catalogue. The study and diploma thesis can be carried out at the FAU (University of Erlangen-Nuremberg) and the DSU (Dongseo University) alternatively. Examination regulations are currently acquired together with the partner university.

For the pilot project 10 university places each are intended for students of Erlangen and Pusan to start with. Further partner universities are acquired for the other study fields at the moment and will be established in the near future in case this pilot project will be a success.

Progress and new concepts in the field of tissue and organ regeneration were topics of the International Congress ""Strategies for Organ Repair" which took place in Erlangen from 1st to 2nd of July 2003 under the patronage of the Bavarian Stateminister for Economy, Dr. Otto Wiesheu.

leer Only few application fields of modern life sciences quicken the phantasy of the physicians as much as the possibility to regenerate organ functions or even whole body organs after being damaged by disease or accident. On one hand these ideas were inspired by an increasing number of possibilities to activate cells for growth and specialisation in a favoured manner, on the other hand by progress in "intelligent" material development and design, which supports the tissue regeneration process actively. Also necessary are improved procedures of medical imaging and "rapid prototyping". A new scientific discipline with a high economical potential is developing itself as "tissue engineering" out of the integration of these fields.

leer The congress will be repeated within a conceivable time in a probably two-years-cycle, as it was a boundless success because of the excellent quality of the speakers, the proficient leadership in the three different sessions and last but not least the intensive discussions of the congress participants.
